Artist Statement

For the independent project  i have used photos i have taken at various music gigs as the main source material. i have tried to portray the 'experience' and 'sensations' you feel when watching bands perform live. i have tried to describe not only the sensation of music, but the whole atmosphere we become part of in these situations. Capturing elements like motion, vibration, memory, time, sound in a type of narrative. i have tried to portray these things using dramatic contrast of colour and shade and varying degrees of clarity. Some images may be brief moments in time captured in a split second, others represent endlessness (being lost in time/ no sense of time or place).
i have used several images pieced together to make up one finished piece, like our memory....... we remember pieces/fragments of moments that seem to make up the whole experience......

Narrative

i dont really want to lay out exactly what i have interpreted these lyrics to mean for each image.... i think they're obvious enough to get some understanding of what im thinking... i also love the ambiguity of the song, so i think the images should match that......

This is the series in order..... i put the lyrics next to the images

I’ve always wanted
To eat glass with you again
But I never knew how
How to talk without
Walls dropping on the eve
The nest they made couldn’t break you
Along the fallen
Scowled a fence of beaks

But the temple is scathing
Through your veins
They were scaling
Through an ice pick of abcess rekoning
And when Miranda sang
Everyone turned away
Used to the noose they obey
And whoever said that they would scatter
Separating the mother from child
She can bat a broken eyelid
Raining maggots from it’s sty

And with the traces that she leaves
She will skin you out alive
All the children go grinding their jaws
The sweet smell of their toothless canals
And the damn she will break, make an ocean from this lake
As they siphon off all of our blood

And when Miranda sang
Everyone turned away
Used to the noose the obey

Breaking down the song meaning

this is what i have found on the net which is other peoples interpretations

"And when Miranda sang Everyone turned away" as in nobody dared to help. And "Used to the noose they obey" I think just signifies that they all know what would happen to them in society if they stood up for her killing her husband. Which is what I believe is going on in this album, along with some other story I haven't totally figured out yet.
My thoughts on the second verse: the first part of the second verse is talking about the lack of care. The Mother (who is supposed to care for her child) "bat a broken eyelid" this to me means that it's usually closed but she can pretend like she cares by occassionally opening it... or maybe even that she is unable to care? but it "rains maggots from its sty" which would point to the idea that her attempts to convey care are superfluous because the truth escapes and shows.

as for the second part of the second verse: this part is all about blood from the mouth which I take to mean words. I'm not sure if the "she" is referring to the mother or Miranda. but i think that the end result is that whoever it is produces more blood than would normally be present through an effort to draw it out- the "siphon" which is used to draw out water from a lake. so the lake becomes an ocean, of blood.

I thought they were very well thought out. To me however, the line "I've always wanted to eat glass with you again" refers to talking about family. If one were literally to eat glass, blood would come from their mouth. Blood is a word commonly used to describe the common link between family members. So I interpret this opening line as Miranda saying to her grandson, "I always wanted to talk to you, and tell you everything. Everything about who you are, and who your mother was, and all about your family. I always wanted to, but I couldn't. They were always watching." "They" being members of the church, represented in the song by the noose.

so yea theres a few nerds commenting on the song.........

Narrative Project

This is the original thing i started doing for the narrative project. it was going to be a take on "the garden of earthy delights"..... This was the middle part of the tryptic where everyones going crazy havin fun and using the earth as their bitch. but i totally didn't like how it was going so i've gone back and started again. ha ha.

yea i decided that i needed to do something that suited the black and white medium better. something more 'dramatic' and fairly ambiguous.... but still fun! so i have taken one of my favorite songs (that is pretty weird to say the least) and made series of images based (loosely) on the lyrics.

the lyrics sound pretty emo, but don't worry little ones its not. here they are....

i am purposely trying not to rely on filters, but the motion blur tool is so good for my projects aim.

more experiments

this is a photo of Strike Anywhere (punk band from U.S.A)

this photo is of Frenzal Rhomb...... can you tell? : )

another experiment

first thoughts on final project

i think im going to use some photos i have taken at various music gigs as the main source material for this project. i am going to try and portray the 'experience' and 'sensations' you get when watching one of your favorite bands perform (to put it simply).

these are just a few words that are going round in my head when i think about what im going to try and portray: motion, vibration, memory, sound, converting an 'audio' sensation into a 'visual' language, a moment frozen in time,

i plan on creating a series of images, some will just look like beams of light.... others may be more recognizable..... but they will all be taken from actual photos i have taken of live bands.

i have been thinking about displaying these images in a book form or as a series of images  on the wall... pieced together to make up one finished piece. (like our memory....... we remember pieces of moments that seem to make up the whole experience)......

hope that made a bit of sense....

this is just a photo from the net i have experimented with it doesn't really say much on its own....  *********

All Done!!!!!

i have ended up with something totally unlike what i expected. it has turned out to be like an advertisement for religion. something you could see in the newspapers classifieds maybe..... glamorising the appeal of something as if you were selling a brand of hemorrhoid creme... yer

i had heaps of different versions of this (just tweaking it) but i saved them as the wrong thing and lost them, so i have missed out a few steps on how i got to this point.....

Ad for hillson

i found this prayer on a site called christian prayers for children.

Almighty god, thy word is cast
Like seeds into the ground;
Now let the dew of heaven descend
And righteous fruits abound.
Amen

IM GOING TO INCLUDE THIS TEXT INTO MY DIGITAL COLLAGE. IM TRYING TO CREATE SOMETHING THAT LOOKS LIKE A NEWSPAPER/TV ADVERTISEMENT FOR RELIGION. INSPIRED BY ORGANISATIONS LIKE HILLSONG CHURCH AND JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES TRYING TO SELL THE NAME OF GOD TO THE YOUTH. EVEN THOUGH IM NOT OVERLY RELIGIOUS I THINK IN A LOT OF CASES THE CHURCH HAS MODIFIED RELIGION INTO SOMETHING TO PROFIT FROM... LIKE SELLING A BRAND.

i would just like to say i hope no one is offended by this im not trying to mock ANY ONES religion im just making a statement on how we as humans have adapted religion into something it (probably) shouldn't be...... the true meaning is lost

this one reminds my of old school black and white TV
i like this one because it reminds me of a kids colouring in book...... Gotta start brainwashing the kids at an early age!!!!!
ink outlines'
experimenting
stained glass- im disappointed with how this effect turned out.... it could have been the finishing touch to my collage, but it distorts the image too much.....

'Glass'
(referencing the stained glass artworks in Churches)

'Diffused Glow'
(referencing the ever faiding appreciation of religion in todays society)

'Tiles'
(referencing religious mosaics and murals)

Collage Thoughts.........

When trying to chose an issue i have strong convictions about i automatically thought of serious issues that probably everyone could relate to... i sat back and started thinking about war, religion, poverty etc......... but i decided that i should make it a little closer to home- something that actually impacts me on a day to day basis. Then i realised theres not that much that is 'serious' and 'personal' at the same time. So.......... i started looking around my room and realised that my collections of 'toys' and useless shit actually holds an ironic sacredness to me. so i started making connections between being consumed by something that may (or may not) be of any real use in someones life. Anyway to cut a long story short- i chose one of my favourite troll dolls (yes i know im a loser) and represented it as an icon of worship eg. Virgin Mary........ so i guess im trying to make a statement about what we as individuals consider to be 'sacred' and worth dedicating our lives to can be so far from whats actually important and/or useful in life, eg. religious belief, footy teams, your country. : ) Hope that made a bit of sense.
WORSHIP IS FRIVOLOUS?????????

Neo Rauch

This is a good example of Rauch's 'cut and paste' style....
Scheune 2003, Oil on canvas, 190 x 250cm

Task 2- Artist presentation

i have chosen the German painter Neo Rauch to present to the class. As my main interest is in painting i thought he would be a good choice. Most of Rauch's paintings incorporate a 'cut and paste' aesthetic which relates back to the tradition of collage and montage.

another random collage

magic

i just found this image. no idea of the artist, but i thought it was too beautiful to not force everyone else to look at it. look at those cheeks!!!!!

quote for the day

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the
mysterious. It is the source of all art and science. He
to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer
pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as
dead.. his eyes are closed.
::: Albert Einstein :::

what i'm up to so far

edited the exposure, saturation, and brightness and contrast.  and used filters to make the hair look.......... better
i thought this was pretty quirky image in reference to  my own collage. i couldn't find the artists name SORRY!!!!! : )
